RFID UHF Tag Performance Survey

European EPC Competence Center (EECC) released the RFID UHF tag study. To help companies compare tags and select the RFID transponders best suited to their products and applications, the EECC tested 20 passive EPC UHF tags from six manufacturers.

The new UHF Tag Performance Survey provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the influence that various materials can have on the operating efficiency of 20 different UHF RFID transponders designed to comply with EPCglobal’s Class1 Gen2 communication protocol and the ISO standard 18000-6C. An exceptional feature of the present study is that it includes, for the first time, transponders with four different chips in the measuring range between 800 and 1,000 MHz. In all tests, the EECC’s state-of-the-art measuring system was an essential prerequisite, enabling reliable, reader-independent measurements in an unechoic chamber.

The survey looked at the most significant factors that influence the operating efficiency of transponders. These include the transponder’s read range, reliability, and applicability on various materials. Correspondingly, transponders were tested initially unattached, then on a 2 mm layer of Teflon, on a 10 mm layer of Teflon, on a PET water bottle and finally on a metal surface. Under these test conditions some of the tested transponders registered impressive read ranges of over 10 meters.

Knowing which tags are best suited to specific applications is vital for system integrators and end users. The study provides reliable answers to these questions, thus saving companies time and resources – the more so as the results are valid worldwide.

The study was sponsored by Intel and T-Systems, who are supporting the EECC in its efforts to ensure that the introduction of EPC and RFID technology runs as smoothly as possible. More information you can find at: http://www.rfidjournal.com/article/view/3468/1/1/
